3、ndthenovelbecameanobjectofcontentionintheearlydaysofitspublication,Hurstonherselfwasmisunderstoodasawriterwithoutaracialconcept.HoweveLlivinginasocietywithdeep—rootedracism,itwasimpossibleforHurstonnottocryoutforracialequality.Furthermore,asasouthernnati
4、ve,shecouldnotpossiblyignoretheracialproblem.Sheisdifferentonlyinthatshewasrelativelymildandindirectinvoicingherstand,viewpointandclaim.InTheirEyes,Hurston’SracialstandismainlyshowedthroughthetransmiRingandrepresentingofblackfolklore.Hurstonmergedinthisn
5、ovelalargeamountoffolkloricelements,whichisnotmerelyanexpressionofherlovefortheblackculturaltraditions,butalsoameansofawakeningblackradialconsciousnessandreconstructingblackcultureidentity.InthetimeofliarlemRenaissance,blackwriterswerefacedwiththedilemma
6、ofa‘‘doubleaudience”.Ontheonehand,Hurstonsatisfiedthecuriosityabouttheblackprimitivecultureofwhitereadersandgothernovelpublishedbyfillingthenovelwithfolkloricelements.Itisevidentthatfolkloreisjustasmilingmasktoshowbeforethewhitesandaofsurvivalthroughpubl
7、ication.Besides,bypresentingblackfolklore,Hurstoncritidizedwhiteculturalvaluesandconveyedherhopeofracialequalityindirectly.Ontheotherhand,byinjectingherloveofblackfolkloreintoTheirEyesshetriedtoarouseanechoinblacksandmakethemrediscovertheirtraditionalcul
8、ture,enhancetheirracialpride,helpthemgetoutoftheshadowof“doubleconsciousness"andreconstructtheircultureidentityConsequently,likemostAfricanAmericans,Hurstonhadastrongracialconsciousnessandadesireforracialequality.Shewasonl
