1、OnEnglish“Death”Euphemism論英語(yǔ)“死亡”的委婉語(yǔ)121.IntroductionEnglisheuphemism,fromtheGreekword“euphemismos”meaning“goodfame“or“goodspeech”,istheuseofapleasant,politeorharmlesssoundingwordorexpressiontomaskharsh,rudeorinfamoustruths(QinXianmei&LiYang,2006:212).ItisalsodefinedintheneweditionofThe
2、OxfordConciseDictionary(1979)as“Substitutionofmildorvagueorroundaboutexpressionforharshordirectone”(FengCuihua,2004:221).EnglisheuphemismisalanguagephenomenonthatexistspopularlyinEnglishpeople’slivesandthe“death”euphemismisjustoneofthemostimportantpartsineuphemisticculture.Duringthepro
3、cessofcommunication,people,inEnglishculture,createagreatmajorityofeuphemisticexpressionsabout“death”inordertomakethe“death”notsoundingsoscared.Ofcourse,the“death”euphemismisbothalanguagephenomenonandculturalphenomenon,whichmakespeopleavoidthisterribleandmysteriousworddirectly,andexpres
4、sestheirmissfeelingandrespect,theirsympathyandcomfortmoreeffectively,whichpeoplecaneasilytoaccept.Deathisanunfortunatethingandadisaster,eveneveryoneintheworldcannotresistthisnaturallawofbirth,ageanddeath.Peoplemerelyuseotherwordsassubstitutesof“death”foritslinguistictaboo.People,fromso
5、cialman’psychology,considerthattalkingaboutthedeathisunlucky,becauseinthemindoftradition,peoplerefertodeathandmisfortunewouldoccur.Therefore,manyeuphemismsintheEnglishlanguageareusedtocoverup“death”.Forinstance,in“DavidCopperfield”,CharlesDickenswrote:“and,itbeinglowwater,hewentoutwith
6、thetide.”(余立三,1985:63).“Hewentoutwiththetide”isaeuphemismthatexpresses“hedied”.Tomasterthiskindofeuphemisticcultureisgoodforsocialcommunication.ThispaperprovidesmoredetailedanalysisfromEnglish“death”euphemism,itsorigin,development,metaphor,agevs.relationship,beforeorafterdeathvs.deadca
