2、eNationalCommunicationAssociation(NCA),soughtandgainedtheagreementoftheAdministrativeCommitteeoftheNCA,toconductasecondreputationalstudyof2doctoralprogramsincommunication.ThefirstNCAreputationalstudyhadreportedits3resultsinApril,1996.Thegoalwastoupdatethatstudyandtoputinplace

3、asystemwhereanewstudywasconductedeverythreeyearssothatnewdoctoralprogramscouldbeaddedandsothatsignificantchangesoccurringinprograms(newfacultyhiresorlosses,newcurricula,newareasofspecialization,newresearchinitiatives,etc.)couldbetakenintoaccountbyevaluatorsandreflectedinprogr

4、amevaluations.MethodologyoftheStudyTheDECdeliberatedoverthedesignofthestudyandagreedthatallprogramsthatofferedthePh.D.inoneormoreofthemajorspecialtyareasofcommunicationstudieswouldbeincluded.ThestudythusincludedthecommunicationprogramsthatwererankedinthefirstNCAstudy,thosenew

5、doctoralprogramsthathadbeenestablishedsincethatfirststudy,andtheresearchanddoctoraleducationcomponents(butnottheprofessionaltrainingcomponents)ofunitsdevotedtothestudyofmasscommunication.Theunitstoberankedwerethoseinwhichthedoctoralprogramswere1ThomasA.Hollihandirectedthestud
