2、icationNetwork,Multicast,ScalabilityABSTRACTAstheuseofDistributedInteractiveSimulationshasgrown,theneedtosupportalargenumberofplayersintheenvironmenthasbecomeapparent.DIShasnotbeenabletosupportalargenumberofentitiesbecauseofitshighnetworkbandwidthrequirementsandthelargecomputationalloa
3、dsitplacesonhostcomputers.Acombinationofanagentbasedarchitectureandsmartnetworksprovidesapromisingsolutiontotheseproblemswhenimplementinglarge-scaledistributedsimulations.Anagentsystemusingtheremoteprogrammingparadigm,transportingthenecessaryparametersandthenecessarycodeforremoteexecut
4、ion[WHITE95],couldreducethenetworkbandwidthrequirementsandlargecomputationalloadsassociatedwithalargedistributedsimulation.ThisreductionwouldoccurbyeliminatingunnecessaryPDUtrafficthroughtheuseofmobileagentsthatrepresenttheoriginatingentity.Theseagentswouldtravelto,andresideon,thehostc
5、omputerofotherentitiesandprovidethenecessarystateinformationforstationaryentitieswithoutusingnetworkresources.SmartNetworkscouldbeusedtocreateaflexibleareaofinterestmanager,allowingentitiestospecifytheirareaofinterestandtheinformationthattheyrequirefromwithinthatarea[HARR95a].Thisappro
