2、outproblemrequiresefficientsearchoflarge,discontinuousspaces.Theefficientlayoutplanningofaproductionsiteisafundamentaltasktoanyprojectundertaking.Thispaperdescribesageneticalgorithm(GA)tosolvetheproblemofoptimalfacilitieslayoutinmanufacturingsystemde
3、signsothatmaterial-handlingcostsareminimized.Theperformanceoftheproposedheuristicistestedoverproblemsselectedfromtheliterature.Computationalresultsindicatethattheproposedapproachgivesbetterresultscomparedtomanyexistingalgorithmsinthisarea.Keywords:fa
4、cilitylayout;flexiblemanufacturing;stochasticprogramming1.INTRODUCTIONComponentlayoutplaysanimportantroleinthedesignandusabilityofmanyengineeringproducts.Thelayoutproblemisalsoclassifiedundertheheadingsofpacking,packaging,configuration,containerstuff
5、ing,palletloadingorspatialarrangementintheliterature.Theprobleminvolvestheplacementofcomponentsinanavailablespacesuchthatasetofobjectivescanbeoptimizedwhilesatisfyingoptionalspatialofperformanceconstraints.Currenttoolsavailableinpracticetodesignersto
6、aidinthegeneralmechanicallayoutprocessmostlyremainatthestagesofphysicalorelectronicmodelswiththeassistanceofmanualadjustmentandvisualfeedback.Thedifficultyinautomatingthemechanicalandelectromechanicallayoutprocessesstemsfrom:(1)themodelingofthedesign
7、objectivesandconstraints;(2)theconstraints;(3)theidentificationofappropriateoptimizationsearchstrategies.Anumberofdesigngoalscanbemodeledaslayoutobjectives.Inaddition,asetofconstrainsoftenhastobesatisfiedtoensuretheapplicabilityofthelayouts.Efficient
8、calculationsofobjectivesandconstraintsarenecessarytosolvethelayoutproblemsinreasonabletimesincetheanalysisofobjectivesandconstraintscanbecomputationallyexpensiveandalargenumberofevaluationsmayberequiredtoachieveconvergence.Thesearchspaceofthelayoutpr
