2、ablynecessary,thatheshouldhaveaperfectknowledgeofthelanguageoftheoriginal,andacompetentacquaintancewiththesubjectofwhichittreats.Ifheisdeficientineitheroftheserequisites,hecanneverbecertainofthoroughlycomprehendingthesenseofhisautho匚Whetheratranslatorshouldgiveacompletet
3、ranscriptoftheideasoftheoriginalworkorhavelibertytochangetheoriginalwork,itbecomesaquestion.thislibertymaybeused,butwiththegreatestcaution.Itmustbefurtherobserved,thatthesuperaddedideashallhavethemostnecessaryconnectionwiththeoriginalthought,andactuallyincreaseitsforce.A
4、nd,ontheotherhand,thatwheneveranideaiscutoffbythetranslator,itmustbeonlysuchasisanaccessory,andnotaprincipalintheclauseorsentence.Itmustlikewisebeconfessedlyredundant,sothatitsretrenchmentshallnotimpairorweakentheoriginalthought.Thesecondgeneralrule-thatthestyleandmanner
5、ofwritingshouldbeofthesamecharacterwiththatoftheoriginal.Nextinimportancetoafaithfultransfusionofthesenseandmeaningofanauthor,isanassimilationofthestyleandmannerofwritinginthetranslationtothatoftheoriginal.Thisrequisiteofagoodtranslation,thoughbutsecondaryinimportance,is
6、moredifficulttobeattainedthantheformer;forthequalitiesrequisiteforjustlydiscerningandhappilyimitatingthevariouscharactersofstyleandmanner,aremuchmorerarethantheabilityofsimplyunderstandinganauthor'ssense?Agoodtranslatormustbeabletodiscoveratoncethetmecharacterofhisauthor
7、'sstyle.Hemustascertainwithprecisiontowhatclassitbelongs;whethertothatofthegrave,theelevated,theeasy,thelively,thefloridandornamented,orthesimpleandunaffected;andthesecharacteristicqualitieshemusthavethecapacityofrenderingequallyconspicuousinthetranslationasintheoriginal
