3、th.Onepromisingavenuefordevelopmentwastoencouragethelocationandexpansionofbusinessestablishmentsthatarelinkedbytheirinterdependenceascustomerandsupplier,orbytheiruseofcommonlocalresources.Suchspatialconcentrationsofactivity,orindustryclusters,wereexpectedtoraiseproductivityforallestabli
4、shmentsinthecluster,thusencouragingotherfirmstolocatethere,andraisinglocalincome.Theideathatspatialclusteringcanraisetheproductivityofestablishmentsishardlynew,havingitsantecedentsineconomicwritingsoveracenturyago.Notsurprisingly,clustershavetraditionallybeenequatedwithcities,ascitiesar
5、ebynaturerelativelylargeclustersofeconomicactivity.Yetclusterscanalsobenefitruraleconomies.Althoughprospectsfortheruraleconomyasawholehaveimprovedsignificantlysincethe1980’s,competitionfornewfirmsamongmanylocalareasremainskeen.Theindustryclusterappearstobeadurablecomponentinthedevelopme
6、ntspecialist’sarsenal.Someofthelocalareabenefitsfromindustryclustershavebeenmeasured,butthepotentialeffectofraisingworkers’earningshasgonerelativelyunexamined.Inthisarticle,wereportfindingsfromananalysisofmanufacturingestablishmentsshowingthatworkersinruralindustryclustersearnabout13per
