3、1247)weretakenfromsowsfrom58differentherdsforthispurposethroughout1988andweretestedbyamonoclonalantibody-captureELISA(MACELISA),atestwhichdetectsantibodiestobothtrans-missiblegastroenteritisvirus(TGEV)andPRCV.Inordertodiscriminatepositiveseratobothco-ronaviruses,ablockinginhibit
4、ionELISAwasusedforallMACELISA-positivesera.ByMACELISA,31.4%ofseratestedwerepositiveandallofthemwereconfirmedspecificallyasPRCV-positivebyblockinginhibitionELISA,thusrulingoutthepresenceofTGEVinthesampledarea;64%ofthefarmshadatleastonePRCV-seropositivesow,indicatingthattheinfecti
5、onwaswidespreadFarmswereclassifiedintothreecategories,accordingtosizeandmanagementpractices.Nosignificantdif-ferenceswerefoundintheprevalenceratesamongthethreefarmtypes;therewas,however,ahighlysignificantcorrelationbetweenincreasingfarmsizeandincreasingwithin-farmseropositivity.
6、IntroductionPorcinerespiratorycoronavirus(PRCV),arespiratoryvariantoftrans-missiblegastroenteritisvirus(TGEV),wasfirstidentifiedinBelgiumin1986(Pensaertetal.,1986).PRCVismorphologicallyandantigenicallysimilartoTGEV,butithasnotropismforthegut,replicatingtohightitersintheres-pirat
7、orytissuesofthepigandnotinducingintestinaldisorders.Instead,itproducesmildorinapparentrespiratorysymptoms,anditaffectsthegrowthoffatteningpigs(Bourgueiletal.,1992;Lanzaetal.,1992).Thehumoralimmuneresponseelicitedbybothcoronavirusesisindistinguishable(duetocommonneutralizationepi
